You Did Everything Right… So Why Isn’t It Working?

Apr 14, 2026

There’s a moment most people don’t talk about.

You had a plan.
You thought it through.
You took action.

And then… it didn’t work the way you expected.

Not a total failure.
But not what you hoped for either.

If you’ve been there, you’re not alone. This comes up more often than people admit, especially for therapists, coaches, and helpers who are used to doing things well.

You’re used to getting it right.

So when something doesn’t land, it can feel heavier than it should.

When Success Doesn’t Follow the Plan

In the conversation from this episode, one thing became clear:

Most of us don’t struggle with effort.
We struggle with expectations.

We map out the 10-year vision.
We build the plan.
We put in the work.

And somewhere along the way, we quietly decide:

“If I do this right… it should work.”

That’s where the tension starts.

Because real life doesn’t follow clean plans.

Even good ideas take longer.
Even meaningful work hits resistance.
Even the right direction can feel unclear for a while.

And when things don’t match the picture in your head, it’s easy to think something is wrong with the idea… or with you.

The Hidden Trap: Moving the Goalposts

One of the most honest moments in the episode was this:

Sometimes we do make progress… we just don’t count it.

You hit a milestone.
You learn something important.
You build momentum.

But instead of recognizing it, you move the goalpost.

Now the win doesn’t feel like a win anymore.

So you keep pushing… but you feel like you’re always behind.

It’s like running on a treadmill that keeps speeding up.

No matter how much effort you give, it never feels like enough.

So What Do You Do When It’s Not Working?

This is the real question.

Do you keep going?
Do you pivot?
Do you let it go?

There isn’t a one-size answer but there is a better way to approach it.

Let me walk you through a simple path.

A Simple Way to Decide Your Next Step

Instead of guessing based on emotion, try this:

1. Look at what’s actually happening

Not what you hoped would happen.
Not what you feel like should happen.

What is actually happening?

  • Are people engaging?
  • Is there some traction, even if it’s slow?
  • Are you learning something useful?

Clarity starts with honesty.

2. Give it a defined window

Don’t decide everything today.

Set a simple checkpoint:

  • “I’ll give this 90 more days.”
  • “I’ll test this one adjustment.”
  • “If this number moves, I’ll continue.”

This keeps you from quitting too early…
or staying too long.

3. Get outside perspective

It’s hard to see clearly when you’re in it.

This is where a group matters.

Not just encouragement, but perspective.

The right people can help you answer:

  • Is this worth continuing?
  • Does this need a small shift?
  • Or is it time to release it?

Sometimes you need someone else to say what you can’t see.

The Hard Truth About Letting Go

Here’s the part most people avoid:

Sometimes the right move is to let go.

Not because you failed.

But because you’ve learned enough to move forward differently.

Holding on too long has a cost.

Every hour you spend on something that isn’t working…
is an hour you’re not investing in what could work.

That’s the quiet weight of staying stuck.

What Opens Up When You Let Go

Letting go isn’t losing.

It’s making space.

Space for better ideas.
Space for clearer direction.
Space for work that actually moves the mission forward.

You don’t lose your calling when something doesn’t work.

You just find a better path to live it out.

You’re Not Behind, You’re Learning

If things haven’t gone the way you expected, it doesn’t mean you’re off track.

It means you’re in the process.

You tried something.
You gathered data.
You learned what works, and what doesn’t.

That’s not failure.

That’s how meaningful work gets built.

A Simple Next Step

Take 10 minutes this week and ask yourself:

  • What’s one thing I’m holding onto that isn’t working?
  • What would it look like to test it… or release it?

You don’t need a perfect plan.

Just a clear next step.

If this speaks to you, I’d encourage you to find a small group of people who can walk with you through these decisions.

You don’t have to figure it out alone.

And sometimes, the right conversation is what helps you move again.
