Breaking Through Your Practice Bottlenecks and Building Confidence

Why Identifying Your Bottleneck Matters

I know that running a group practice comes with its own set of unique challenges. As you look to grow, you might feel stuck. I was talking with Joshua Brummel recently, and he put it perfectly, “Every practice owner struggles with different things, some more with marketing than others, some with recruiting, intake, operations, or finances.”

The reality is, no matter what stage your practice is in, there is usually one primary bottleneck holding you back. I want you to think of your business like a river. The flow can be wide and strong in many spots, but there’s always one narrow point slowing everything down. If you can identify and fix that single choke point, your capacity, and your income, can grow quickly.

For you, this might mean streamlining your intake process, improving your marketing system, or even upgrading your hiring approach. When you remove the main obstacle, you create more room for the mission, passion, and purpose that drive you.

Scaling the Systems That Already Work for You

Something Joshua said really resonated with me. He noted that successful businesses figure out how to do all of the little things they already know how to do, just at a larger scale. Growth isn't about completely reinventing your practice. It is about repeating what works, with more reach and consistency.

If you have a referral network that brings you steady clients, you can document that system and hand it off to an intake coordinator. By scaling your proven systems, you turn singular wins into ongoing success. This is how you build a sustainable practice that keeps your mission moving forward.

The Courage to Keep It Simple

One of the biggest lessons Joshua learned while planning an in person conference was the power of keeping things simple. He asked himself, “What is the simple version of this that’s still viable for the outcomes we want?”

When trying to grow, the temptation is to pile on more services, more programs, and more complexity. But extra complexity can slow you down and drain your energy. Simplifying not only helps you move forward sooner, it also keeps your focus on the people you are serving.

For example, Joshua decided not to have event sponsors for his first year. That choice freed up his mental space to focus on content and connection rather than juggling extra logistics. In your practice, this could mean launching a new group with a simple email announcement and video calls instead of first building a complicated client portal.

Testing Your Ideas Before Going Big

I loved Joshua’s approach to testing his idea before fully committing. He ran a one day virtual event as a trial run for the conference. This is what Jim Collins, in his book Great by Choice, calls firing bullets before cannonballs. You test small before you invest big.

As a practice owner, this could mean hosting one short workshop, running a small pilot group, or offering a single new service before building out an entire program. Not only will you learn what works, but you will also gain confidence in your ability to deliver value. That courage then compounds with every step you take.

Building Partnerships for a Bigger Impact

Another key insight was the power of partnerships. Joshua teamed up with Julie Harris of Green Oak Accounting to cohost the event. Partnerships can double your reach, share the workload, and bring new expertise to your community.

You don't have to scale your practice alone. For you, this might mean cohosting a workshop with another professional, creating a referral partnership with a local physician, or pooling resources with another practice owner. Collaboration can accelerate your mission while keeping your workload manageable.

Turning Your Ideas into Action

The conference Joshua is leading will include roundtable sessions where attendees can sit with experts and get personalized feedback. This is a powerful reminder that learning alone isn’t enough. Action is where the growth truly happens.

As you plan your practice’s growth, think about how you can build in concrete action steps. For yourself, make sure you are not just gathering ideas. Schedule time to create, test, and refine your next steps.

Scaling a therapy practice takes courage, confidence, and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone. Identify your bottleneck, scale what already works, simplify your approach, test before you invest, and partner when it makes sense.

As I closed out my conversation with Joshua, I was reminded of why I love these discussions. They are not just about business growth. They are about putting your mission in motion so you can create something that lasts.

It all comes back to that river. Find the narrow spot, clear it, and watch the flow of your passion and purpose carry you forward.
