Navigating Change and Rebranding: A Real Conversation with Steve Bisson

If you've ever found yourself at a crossroads—where the thing you've built no longer fits the person you've become—this post is for you.

I recently sat down with my friend and fellow podcaster, Steve Bisson, for a deeply honest conversation about change, rebranding, and aligning your work with what truly lights you up. Steve has been podcasting for four years with his show Finding Your Way Through Therapy, and while it served him well for a long time, something inside was telling him it was time for a shift.

As someone who supports therapists and mission-driven leaders in launching online courses, I know how scary it can be to walk away from something you've invested in. So when Steve told me he was rebranding his podcast, I knew it was going to be a rich discussion—and wow, did he deliver.

“When it doesn’t serve you anymore, you’ve got to move on.”

That’s how Steve opened our episode. And honestly, that quote stopped me in my tracks.

He went on to share how his podcast, which started out as an extension of his book, was beginning to feel like a grind. He wasn’t excited about some of the topics anymore—even though the guests were great. His energy was telling him something important.

“I had limited interest in certain episodes—not because of the people, but because I wasn’t connecting with the subject,” he said. “And my audience could probably feel that too.”

That’s such a key insight. Our audience can tell when we're going through the motions. And for Steve, the tipping point came during the summer when he found himself replaying old episodes for nearly two months straight. That break was necessary, but it was also a wake-up call.

“I love working with first responders. That’s my language.”

Steve is a trauma therapist who’s worked with grief, crisis response, and first responders for over 20 years. When he looked at his podcast analytics, something clicked—episodes that focused on trauma, grief, corporate coaching, and first responders consistently outperformed the others. And more importantly, those were the topics that made him feel alive.

“That’s when I knew it wasn’t just about the audience—it was about me,” he said. “That stuff resonates with me, and I think it showed in how I hosted those episodes.”

So instead of forcing himself to keep going with a general therapy podcast, he decided to rebrand. But not just for clicks or clarity—he did it because it felt more authentic.

From Finding Your Way to Resilience Development in Action

I asked Steve how he landed on the new podcast name, and his process was both thoughtful and creative.

He talked to trusted peers, used AI tools to brainstorm ideas, and kept circling back to one word that showed up over and over again: resilience. Not only is it a key concept in trauma work, but it’s also a term used frequently in first responder communities.

The final name?
🆕 Resilience Development in Action — or RDA for short.

It’s specific. It’s empowering. And it’s a name that actually reflects the content and the people he serves.

“Finding Your Way Through Therapy was a mouthful. Resilience Development in Action is still a little long, but RDA is short and memorable,” he explained. “Plus, the new logo includes icons for fire departments, paramedics, and psychology, which tells people exactly who the podcast is for.”

Logos, Websites, and Doing It the Smart Way

You might think rebranding is expensive, but Steve found a smart way to do it on a budget. He used AI-generated mockups to explore concepts, then hired a human designer to polish it up. The total cost? Just $125.

And when it came to his website, he kept it simple. Instead of creating a brand-new domain, he updated everything under his personal name:
👉 steve-bisson.com

That kind of continuity keeps things clean and easy to find—even as the content evolves.

Staying Aligned (and Letting Go)

Here’s what I loved most about our conversation: Steve didn’t shy away from the hard part of rebranding. He acknowledged the sunk cost of time, money, and effort. But he also recognized that continuing out of obligation would only lead to burnout.

“I’m 49. I don’t have time to grind through stuff that doesn’t feel right anymore,” he told me. “I’d rather pivot and do something I love.”

As someone who’s worked with many therapists and course creators stuck in the same loop—building something that no longer serves them—I can’t tell you how much I respect that.

It’s brave. It’s wise. And it’s a reminder to all of us: your work should energize you, not drain you.

Final Takeaway: You’re Allowed to Change

If you’ve been second-guessing your niche, your brand, or even your career path—this episode is your permission slip. You don’t have to keep going just because it’s what you’ve always done. You can pause, reflect, and realign.

Steve did. And now he’s more motivated than ever to speak directly to the people he’s meant to help.

“Everything’s moving parts in life,” he said. “You’re allowed to grow.”

Yes. Yes, you are.
