This is part two of the Unpaused Playbook series, and we're talking today about the one thing that will actually get you moving again. It's no secret. [00:00:30] And if you haven't already downloaded the free resource from this episode, the Unpause Playbook, I invite you to go to course Creation studio slash unpause and download the free resource and get unstuck today. Now on with the show.
[00:00:47]
[00:00:49] James Marland: There's a lot of people in the helping profession who carry a mission inside them. they have this idea, it's a framework, a program, [00:01:00] a course a system that they, they have deep inside them that they believe they can help people. Beyond the therapy office, beyond the work that they do every day in one-to-one sessions, they have this hope or dream, but somewhere along the way that calling, that mission paused and it paused.
[00:01:22] Not because it stopped being important, it pause it. It didn't pause because it didn't matter. It stopped because the next step became unclear and fear creeped in. In this series on how to restart the mission that you paused, we're exploring how meaningful work stalls, how it pauses, and then how to start moving again.
[00:01:49] In the last episode, we talked about why many missions quietly stall, and pause. In this episode, we're gonna talk about the thing that actually restarts [00:02:00] your momentum, and that's clarity. Because when the next step becomes visible, progress becomes possible again. When you can see what to do next and how to do it, you take action and it becomes less fearful.
[00:02:21] This is the Scaling Therapist Podcast, where we help mission-driven professionals turn their experience into meaningful courses, programs, and resources that impact the world. It's time to put your mission in motion.
[00:02:37] In the last episode, we talked about something many people experience in their hearts, but they don't talk about it out loud. Meaningful missions don't always fail. Sometimes they take a pause because we don't know how to move forward. And when that happens, [00:03:00] people often assume that the problem is internal, that the problem is motivation.
[00:03:07] What really happens is usually the next step is unclear. It's unsafe, and then when that clarity disappears, an inner struggle shows up. For many people, that inner struggle, it isn't dramatic. It's just this quiet thought. It's the, when you stop, it's a constant frustration in the background of your mind.
[00:03:35] You hit a bump, you hit a snag, the next step isn't clear. And then there's this voice in your head, and I've experienced this a lot, believe me. But there's this voice that says, if I was better at this, if I was just smarter, I could figure this out. If I was better with people, people would understand if I just understood the [00:04:00] right words and how to market this.
[00:04:02] Everything would be better if I could just manage my money better. If I could raise more money, then I would be able to be successful. Maybe it's you if I was more confident, like if I was a better speaker, if I could be dramatic in public and get people to rally around my cause then I would be successful.
[00:04:26] Then everything would work. And so with the, this feeling of I'm not enough, that I'm not good enough. The mission just sits there. It's not dead, but there's no action going on. You're not moving either. And sometimes what's worse is there's small moments of hope, like maybe I can start again.
[00:04:50] Or maybe if I just find the right partner, or maybe if I just bump into the right opportunities. I'll get started [00:05:00] again and everything will be will just pick right back up again. And there there's like glimmers of hope. But then what happens is we let our limiting beliefs crash down on us again.
[00:05:12] We end up in this place where nothing feels safe and it's hard to move out of that. That, uh, comfort zone and then compound upon that you just feel bad. You just feel bad that you're not moving forward. You feel bad that you are not enough. You feel bad that the people you can help, they're not getting the help that they need.
[00:05:37] And you start, you just start believing that this might just be the way things are, that you're never going to get it started and slowly. Slowly, something starts to grow it. And that's regret. Regret and fear that maybe the mission's over and maybe you're never going to move forward.
[00:05:57] Most people believe [00:06:00] that they are. The problem~ The problem that ~the problem here is motivation. The problem here is they don't have enough willpower. The problem here is they aren't dedicated enough to the mission. The real problem is it's none of that. It's direction. They don't. You just don't know what the next step is to take when the next step isn't clear.
[00:06:23] Every decision feels risky, and when every decision feels risky, even capable. People with pure hearts hesitate.
[00:06:35] I once worked with a therapist who had an important mission on her heart, and she wanted to restart. She wanted to bring to life her mission, and she had already done this once. She had already built something meaningful at the foundations of this in ~a previous at ~a previous place, but. At some point that was taken away not because of anything [00:07:00] she did, but because of something other people did.
[00:07:03] And after losing that work, she found it incredibly difficult to want to commit again to the this mission in a different place. She wondered if she ever got good at it again, if she ever was successful again. Maybe something bad would take it away and something out of her control would destroy it. So she had trouble taking action on the things she needed to know to do because ~she was, ~she was fearful and discouraged and frustrated.
[00:07:37] And so she, uh, ~she res, ~she hesitated and through working with her. We realized she realized at first, after I gave her some questions that she was hesitating. It wasn't a skill issue. It wasn't an issue about what's in her heart. It wasn't about being successful, it wasn't about getting results. She had all [00:08:00] that.
[00:08:00] She realized she was afraid. She was afraid that ~if she rebuilt her meaningful, um. The, ~if she rebuilt the meaningful program again, that somebody might take it away from her again. And once she saw that, clearly ~her, like ~her mind shifted. There was her countenance shifted, like she realized the obstacle.
[00:08:24] She did not need to be a victim of what was going on. The obstacle wasn't. Mysterious or out there anymore, it became visible. And then when that became visible, we were able to process through, well then what's the next step you can take? If this is where you want to go, what's the next step you can take to get there?
[00:08:44] And ~I just, ~I just love that stepping stone metaphor because this is how I view clarity. Uh, imagine you're crossing a river through stepping stones and. If you can see the next stone clearly, and it's [00:09:00] within reach and you can do it, then you take the next step. You step forward without hesitation.
[00:09:06] But what if the step is too far away or there's a lot of stones and you're not sure which ones are stable. You don't know which ones the right one that's gonna get you across the river. Or maybe the stone is so far away you, you can't see it, you don't know, which you don't even know where it is. What happens then is you don't cross the river, you stop moving and it's not because you don't want you, you're lazy, like you don't wanna get across.
[00:09:34] It's not because you don't care about getting across, but you, you stop because it's not safe. It's not safe to, to take the next step from where you are to where you want to go. And that's what, that's exactly what happens when you get stuck. You lose clarity and when the mission feels too big and too risky you don't know the next [00:10:00] step to take.
[00:10:02] And what clarity does for the mission-minded entrepreneur, the mission-minded therapist, coach, pastor, clarity restores movement because when the next step becomes obvious, fear loses much of its power. And here's the ~trick. A ~trick. I guess. You don't need to know the full path. You just need to know the next right step.
[00:10:31] And that's exactly why I created the Unpause playbook. I want you to know why you're moving across that river and the next step you can take. Over the years of working with coaches and professionals who build meaningful work, I've seen the same pattern again and again, and I've seen it in myself, myself.~ myself.~
[00:10:54] We're not the we. It's not that we don't have ideas. It's not that we're not [00:11:00] producing anything meaningful. It's that the next step, the next thing we need to do. It isn't clear. The Unpaused Playbook helps you reconnect with that mission. It helps you reassess what you care about, and it helps you identify your mission and vision and the next step to move forward.
[00:11:19] So let me ask you something. If your mission feels paused right now, what would the next stepping stone look like for you? What's the next thing you need to do? Not the entire plan. Just the next step if you don't know, but that mission inside you hasn't died yet. I want to encourage you to download the Unpause Playbook.
[00:11:46] It's a free resource and it's designed to help you move from hesitation to clarity so you can begin again, and you can start taking those actions that will lead you to where you want to go. [00:12:00] In the next episode, we're gonna talk about something just as important, because even when you find clarity, trying to carry that mission all alone can still make it stall.
[00:12:13] And many meaningful missions, many uh, callings. Pause for one final reason. The person carrying it tries to carry it all alone, and ~they pur, ~they isolate themselves.
[00:12:27] If you are interested ~in, ~in un pausing your mission go to the show notes and download the unpause playbook. It's now time to get the clarity you need to unpause and put that mission in motion.
